How does fire actually start? Heat is applied to dry wood or tinder.
Around 300∘F (150∘C), it smokes as cellulose decomposes, releasing volatile gases. Wood converts to charcoal (carbon) and ash (minerals).
Around 500∘F (260∘C), these gases ignite.
As long as fuel and oxygen are supplied, the fire burns.

Successful fire requires a balance of dry fuel and oxygen. An imbalance prevents ignition or causes inefficient burning (e.g., a smoky fire, failing to uphold all sides of the fire triangle).

Fuel Categories: Materials for Your Fire
Understanding fuel types available in BC’s ecosystems is critical:
Prime BC Tinder and Kindling Sources: A Snapshot
British Columbia’s diverse ecosystems offer a variety of excellent natural fire-starting materials. In coastal rainforests, the fibrous bark of Western Red Cedar stands out for its ability to be processed into fine, fluffy tinder that can often be lit even when the outer bark is damp. Throughout much of BC’s interior and northern regions, Birch bark is prolific; its papery layers are rich in flammable oils and can be peeled from live or dead trees (sustainably, if from live trees) to catch a flame readily. Dead, dry lower branches of coniferous trees like Spruce and Fir (“squaw wood”) provide readily available fine kindling.
Tinder:
Description: Fine, dry material with a low flash point that catches a spark or minimal flame. Must be bone-dry and loosely arranged for airflow. This is distinct from kindling; tinder will smolder/glow from a spark alone. Form into a small “bird’s nest” shape before ignition.
Types:
- True Tinder (Catches Spark): Char cloth, processed Hoof Fungus, dried True Tinder Fungus, finely scraped Fatwood (fluff or powder), Western Red Cedar bark (shredded very fine), cottonwood inner bark, dry grass heads, cattail down, milkweed down, dryer lint (especially cotton-based). Agave stalks (if found) are excellent for carrying coals. Polypore fungus can supplement. Cotton balls (especially with petroleum jelly) work well.
- Flame Tinder (Needs Flame): Birch bark (abundant in much of BC), dry pine needles, freshly dried pine cambium, hemlock branch tips, fine wood shavings, smallest twigs, dry flood debris. Preparation: Protecting tinder from moisture is vital. Roll/buff fibrous tinder (bark, grass) between hands until fine and fluffy. A small handful is usually enough.
- Note on Fatwood: Fatwood is pine wood (from Lodgepole, Ponderosa, or other pines common in BC) heavily impregnated with resin (pitch). It’s often found in the stumps of old pines, especially near the base or where branches met the trunk; in BC, look for this in dead-standing or fallen Lodgepole or Ponderosa pines, particularly in drier interior forests or well-drained ridges. This resin makes it waterproof and highly flammable. To use it, break off a piece and shave or scrape it into a fine, fluffy pile of wood powder, fluff, or thin shavings using a knife or striker edge. This pile will readily ignite from sparks generated by a ferro rod or flint and striker, making it an excellent natural tinder, especially in damp coastal or mountain conditions. It’s a sustainable resource when harvested responsibly from dead stumps.
- Synthetic Tinder (Char Cloth): Made by charring vegetable fibers (cotton, linen, jute). Heat fabric strips in an airtight container (or smother flames between bark) until charred but not ash. Excellent for catching sparks. Natural Tinder (Fungus):
- Hoof Fungus (False Tinder Fungus): Grows on dead birch/aspen. Extract cottony interior, boil in wood ash slurry, then dry.
- True Tinder Fungus (Birch Polypore): Found on living birch. Use the dried, light brown interior.
Kindling:
Description: Small, dry twigs and wood pieces, slightly larger than tinder. Ignites from the tinder’s flame or a match. Divided into fine and coarse kindling for progressive fire building.
- Fine Kindling: Ignites from a small flame or glowing tinder ember. Can be scarce. Examples: Black poplar inner bark (superior), dry grass, dry Old Man’s Beard lichen (best in winter, fluff well), fine non-resinous wood scrapings, charcoal/punky wood (ignited by ember).
- Coarse Kindling: Matchstick-thick dry wood, ignited by open flame or substantial ember. Examples: Birch bark shreds, black poplar outer bark shavings (dry inside), conifer resin/pitch wood (essential aid for matches in wet), dead pine needles (use attached to branch if possible), dead hemlock branch ends. Look for the small, dead lower branches on spruce and fir trees (“squaw wood”).
First Wood: Wood ranging from pencil thickness up to wrist thickness. Ignited by kindling, builds heat for firewood.
Firewood: Wood wrist thickness and larger. Sustains the fire.

Selecting the Fire Site

- Time: How much time do you have to build and maintain the fire?

Chapter 5
Ignition and Establishment: From Spark to Stable Flame

The goal is to transfer enough heat to your prepared tinder to cause it to glow or flame. Once ignition is achieved, the subsequent establishment stage bridges the gap between this initial spark or flame and a self-sustaining fire. Moisture is the biggest challenge during establishment, as water absorbs significant heat during evaporation (540 cal/gram), cooling kindling and hindering flame spread.
Using Matches and Lighters (As a Backup)

Therefore, view matches and lighters primarily as backups or tools for specific situations (like extreme difficulty lighting damp tinder). If you must use them:
Storage: Keep matches waterproofed (test container by submerging) and store in 3 separate locations (e.g., pants pocket, shirt pocket, pack reserve). Container must be openable with numb hands. Never carry loose matches.
Conserve: Use them sparingly and only on fully prepared fire lays. Larger matches burn longer (kitchen match ~40s, paper match ~15s). Practice with minimal resources (e.g., split paper match).
Preparation: Build a small pyramid or tepee of kindling over a tinder base, leaving an opening for lighting.

- Tinder: Material that glows from a spark (Char cloth, processed Hoof Fungus, dried True Tinder Fungus – see Fuel Categories section in Chapter 3 for prep). Technique:

- Initial Drilling (Mating): Begin smooth, full strokes with bow (use entire string length). Keep drill perpendicular, bow horizontal. Control string wander on drill by tilting bow slightly or using finger tension. Start with light downward pressure, gradually increase. Feel for the change from smooth sliding to gritty friction (“mating”). This phase can take seconds to minutes.
- Take a Break (Optional but Recommended): After mating and first smoke/dust appears, pause briefly to relax, catch breath, and prepare mentally for ember generation. Ensure drill/hole are ready.
- Ember Generation Drilling: Resume bowing with smooth, consistent strokes. Control drill stability (may need slight wrist tilt). Vary pressure and speed to maintain friction without binding/slipping. Tip: Take up bowstring slack with fingers of bow hand for better control as string stretches. - Spark Formation: Consistent friction creates smoke -> fine dust -> heavier smoke -> darker dust. A spark usually forms in <30 seconds once properly mated.
- Recognize Spark/Ember: Look for thin smoke wisp from one point in dust pile (not dispersed smoke). Or, entire pile may glow.
- Transfer Ember: Carefully lift drill straight up (no rush, ember can last minutes). Pick up bark holding smoking dust pile. Gently fan/blow softly. When ember glows, carefully tip/drop it into prepared tinder nest.
- Blow to Flame: Fold tinder gently over ember. Blow gently at first, increasing vigor as ember spreads and glows brighter. Sudden flame! Immediately add fine kindling.
Advanced Bow Drill Techniques & Observations:
- Avoid Exhaustion: Focus on smooth control, relax. Getting winded means too much pressure or jerky motion.
- Troubleshooting: If no spark, check wood, dryness, pressure, speed, technique. Don’t give up easily, but know when to change wood set.

- Position: Comfortable position allowing full downward hand run. Foot holds board steady (heel often works better than ball). Keep knee clear.
