THE ART OF THE PERFECT START

QUICK-FIRE: THE ART OF THE PERFECT START
Reliable. Simple. Unstoppable.
Congratulations on your new Quick-Fire Striker Kit. Below is the bushcrafter method for building a sustainable fire in any condition, focusing on the “placement technique” to ensure success every time.
STEP 1: THE FOUNDATION (Preparation)
The secret to a one-strike fire is surface area. Before you strike, you must create a “fluff” to catch the spark.
Fatwood: Use the 90-degree spine of a knife or the scraping edge of your Quick-Fire striker (not the striking side) to scrape the wood. Do not just make shavings; create a pile of fine, fibrous fluff.
Cotton or Lint: If using cotton or dryer lint, pull the fibres apart until they are light and airy.
The Pile: Gather your fluff into a tight, concentrated mound roughly the size of a golf ball.
STEP 2: THE STRIKE (Ignition)
Your striker is designed for maximum spark density.
The Grip: Hold the striker with two fingers for ergonomic control.
The Angle: Position the striker close to your pile of fluff—almost touching it.
The Motion: Use a firm, swift downward stroke to shower the fluff with sparks. Aim to land the spark deep within the fibres where heat is trapped.
STEP 3: THE BUILD (Strategic Placement)
Once the fluff is glowing or flaming, do not rush.
Avoid the “Dump”: Never drop a handful of wood on a young flame, as this smothers the oxygen.
Precision Placing: One by one, “place” your next level of tinder (slightly larger fatwood or dry fibrous material) around and over the flame.
Airflow: Leave gaps between each piece to allow the fire to breathe.
STEP 4: THE “SAFE” SIGNAL
Listen for the crackle. This is the most critical stage of fire building.
The Indicator: Wait until you hear the distinct sound of wood fibres burning.
The Meaning: Crackling indicates the heat has penetrated the tinder and combustion is self-sustaining.
Proceed: Once the crackling is steady, it is safe to add larger kindling.
——————————————————————————–
RESPONSIBLE FIRE STARTING
Water Ready: Always have a water source or fire extinguisher nearby before you begin.
Conditions: While these steps work in ideal conditions, damp or snowy weather requires more fluff and more patience.

Identifying Canadian-Manufactured Products for Bug Bite Relief: A Market Analysis

  1. Executive Summary

This report presents an analysis of consumer products manufactured in Canada that are advertised to resolve the effects of bug bites. Based on a review of available information, six distinct products have been identified that meet these specific criteria. The key brands offering these Canadian-made solutions include Nature’s Willow, Zax’s Original, AtlanTick Repellent Products, Great Canadian Soap Company, Purple Frog, and Aleva Naturals (for one specific product with retailer-supported bug bite claims).

A notable characteristic of these confirmed Canadian-made products is the significant prevalence of natural or plant-based ingredients in their formulations. This suggests a potential market positioning strategy within Canada, possibly catering to consumer preferences for such ingredients in topical remedies. This trend is apparent when observing that several of the identified Canadian manufacturers emphasize natural components like white willow bark, colloidal oatmeal, tea tree oil, and various essential oils. This contrasts with some internationally manufactured, widely available products that may rely more on synthetic active ingredients, although some of those brands also offer “natural” variants. The pattern suggests Canadian manufacturers in this niche might be leveraging the “natural” trend as a differentiator.

Furthermore, the analysis indicates a limited presence of large pharmaceutical companies offering products explicitly marketed for bug bite relief and clearly confirmed as “Made in Canada.” The identified Canadian-made products predominantly originate from smaller, specialized, or natural product companies. This observation may point to a potential gap in the market or reflect differing strategic priorities for larger pharmaceutical entities in the Canadian over-the-counter (OTC) sector for this particular ailment. While large companies like Teva Canada possess Canadian manufacturing capabilities, definitive confirmation of Canadian manufacturing for their specific bug bite-related products was not explicitly available in the reviewed materials. This could imply that the market for highly localized bug bite treatments is currently better served by niche players who emphasize their local origin and unique formulations.

A significant challenge throughout this analysis was the definitive verification of “Made in Canada” claims for all potential products. The distinction between a company being Canadian-owned or having a Canadian presence, versus a specific product being manufactured in Canada, is crucial and not always transparent. The final count of products reflects a strict adherence to available evidence supporting both Canadian manufacturing and explicit advertising for bug bite relief.

  1. Introduction

The objective of this report is to identify and quantify consumer products that are verifiably manufactured in Canada and are advertised, either directly or through strong implication, to resolve the effects of bug bites. This analysis is based on a systematic review of provided research materials. Bug bites are a common nuisance, leading to consistent consumer demand for effective relief products, thereby creating a relevant market segment for examination.

The methodology employed involved scrutinizing available information to pinpoint products marketed for bug bite relief. Subsequently, efforts were made to verify the country of origin for each identified product, focusing on claims of Canadian manufacturing. This dual-criteria approach ensures that the findings are specific to the user’s request.

III. Canadian-Made Bug Bite Relief Products: Market Landscape

This section details the products identified as being manufactured in Canada and advertised for alleviating the effects of bug bites, offering insights into their characteristics and market positioning.

  1. Confirmed “Made in Canada” Products Advertised for Bug Bite Relief

The following products have been confirmed through available information to meet both criteria: manufactured in Canada and advertised for bug bite relief.

  • Nature’s Willow Bug Bite Balm: Manufactured by Nature’s Willow, this product is explicitly stated as “Made in Canada”. It is marketed for “Bug Bite & Sting Relief,” claiming to “Stop the Itch” and offer “natural bug bite & sting relief” by “stopping pain and itch fast”.
  • Zax’s Original Bug Bite & Itch Cream: Produced by Zax’s Healthcare, this cream is identified as “Made in Canada” and “Proudly made in Ontario”. Its advertising clearly targets “bug bites,” with claims to “Stop itching,” “Reduce pain and protect skin,” and “Relieve irritation & swelling”.
  • AtlanTick Comfort Patches: From AtlanTick Repellent Products Inc., a Nova Scotia-based manufacturing company, implying Canadian manufacturing. Retailer Well.ca describes AtlanTick as a “proudly Canadian, Indigenous Women owned and operated outdoor and tick-safety product manufacturing company”. These patches are designed to “Reduce bug bite itching, scratching and scarring” and offer “relief from insect bites and skin irritations”.
  • Great Canadian Soap Company Bug Bite Body Butter: This product is explicitly stated to be made on their farm in Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is marketed as “Soothing care for insect bites to ease the swelling and itchiness”.
  • Purple Frog Wild Relief Anti Itch Spray: An Amazon.com listing specifies the “Country of Origin: Canada” for this product. Canadian retailer Well.ca also flags it as a Canadian product. It is advertised to “Soothe Bug Bites and Burns” and provide “itch protection and relief from bug bites”.
  • Aleva Naturals – On The Spot Moisturizing Balm: An Amazon.ca listing for this Aleva Naturals product states “Made in Canada”. While its primary marketing is for “minor skin irritations,” Canadian retailer Nutrition House includes “bites” in its product description: “helps sooth pain from bumps, bruises, bites, or other minor skin irritations”. This specific inclusion by a retailer, coupled with the “Made in Canada” claim, supports its inclusion.

The table below summarizes these confirmed products, providing a clear overview that directly addresses the quantitative aspect of the inquiry by itemizing each product meeting the strict criteria. This centralization of data allows for quick verification and forms a basis for further market understanding.

Table 1: Confirmed Canadian-Made Bug Bite Relief Products

Brand Name Product Name Manufacturer Explicit “Made in Canada” Evidence (Source & Detail) Advertised Bug Bite Relief Claim (Source & Detail) Product Form
Nature’s Willow Bug Bite Balm Nature’s Willow “Made in Canada” on product page. “Bug Bite & Sting Relief,” “Stop the Itch”. Balm
Zax’s Original Bug Bite & Itch Cream Zax’s Healthcare Inc. “Made in Canada” on retailer/listing ; “Proudly made in Ontario”. “Relieves pain and itching from bug bites”. Cream
AtlanTick Repellent Products Comfort Patches AtlanTick Repellent Products Inc. Nova Scotia-based manufacturing company ; Retailer Well.ca states “proudly Canadian… manufacturing company”. “Reduce bug bite itching, scratching and scarring,” “relief from insect bites”. Patch
Great Canadian Soap Company Bug Bite Body Butter Great Canadian Soap Company Made on their PEI farm, Canada. “Soothing care for insect bites to ease the swelling and itchiness”. Body Butter
Purple Frog Wild Relief Anti Itch Spray Purple Frog Amazon.com listing: “Country of Origin: Canada” ; Well.ca indicates Canadian product. “Soothes Bug Bites and Burns,” “itch protection and relief from bug bites”. Spray
Aleva Naturals On The Spot Moisturizing Balm Aleva Naturals Amazon.ca listing: “Made in Canada”. Retailer Nutrition House: “helps sooth pain from bumps, bruises, bites, or other minor skin irritations”. Primary marketing: “minor skin irritations”. Balm
  1. Products with Ambiguous “Made in Canada” Status or Bug Bite Indication

Several products were identified that are marketed for bug bite relief and are associated with Canadian companies, but their specific “Made in Canada” manufacturing status or the directness of their bug bite claim was not unequivocally confirmed in the reviewed materials.

  • Aleva Naturals – First Rescue Calendula Skin Cream: This product is confirmed as “Made in Canada”. It is marketed for a range of skin issues including “skin rashes, scrapes, sun burns, eczema & minor skin irritations,” and for “itchy skin”. While these symptoms are certainly characteristic of bug bites, the product is not as directly advertised for “bug bites” as those listed in the previous section. The marketing strategy for such multi-purpose creams made in Canada may aim to broadly cover symptoms common to bug bites under general skin condition relief. This approach could be intended to appeal to a wider consumer base or may relate to regulatory considerations for making highly specific therapeutic claims.
  • Boiron Dapis Gel: Boiron Canada, the distributor, is described as “Proudly Canadian” , and Dapis Gel is explicitly for “insect bites”. However, Boiron is a French multinational homeopathic company , and the available information does not explicitly state that Dapis Gel itself is manufactured in Canada. This ambiguity is critical when applying a strict “Made in Canada” criterion.
  • Life Brand Insect Bite Gel (Shoppers Drug Mart): Shoppers Drug Mart, the retailer for Life Brand, is “Proudly Canadian owned and operated” , and the gel is formulated for “Insect Bites & Stings”. However, the specific country of origin for the gel’s manufacturing is not explicitly stated in the provided documents. Loblaw, the parent company of Shoppers Drug Mart, uses a “Prepared in Canada” label for some Life Brand products, which indicates manufacturing in Canada with domestic and/or imported ingredients. Without explicit confirmation for this particular gel, its “Made in Canada” status remains unconfirmed from the available data.
  • Teva Calamine Lotion with Antihistamine: Teva Canada Ltd. is a Canadian company with established manufacturing facilities in Canada. The Calamine Lotion with Antihistamine is marketed for conditions including “insect bites” and is listed with a Drug Identification Number (DIN) from Health Canada under Teva Canada Ltd.. While these are strong indicators of Canadian association and regulatory approval for sale in Canada, no reviewed document explicitly confirms that this specific lotion is manufactured in one of Teva’s Canadian facilities.

The difficulty in confirming product-specific “Made in Canada” status for brands owned by large companies, even those with a significant Canadian manufacturing presence, points to a potential transparency issue for consumers and analysts. A company’s Canadian identity or operational presence does not automatically mean all its products sold in Canada are also manufactured domestically. For instance, companies like Teva Canada and Loblaw (Life Brand) are Canadian entities or have substantial Canadian operations, including manufacturing. Yet, for specific items like Teva’s Calamine Lotion or Life Brand’s Insect Bite Gel, the provided information lacks a direct, unambiguous “Made in Canada” declaration for the product itself, unlike smaller brands that often highlight this feature. This suggests that for larger, diversified companies, product sourcing and manufacturing can be intricate and may not always be domestic for every stock-keeping unit (SKU), even if the overarching brand has a strong Canadian identity. This creates an information deficit that complicates precise tracking and suggests consumers might make assumptions based on brand nationality that are not always accurate at the individual product level.

  1. Product Categorization & Formulations

The confirmed Canadian-made bug bite relief products primarily come in topical application forms, including balms, creams, a body butter, a spray, and patches. This focus on localized, direct treatment is logical for addressing bug bites. The emergence of patches, such as AtlanTick Comfort Patches , indicates innovation in the category, offering a potentially non-messy and longer-lasting method of localized relief. Patches can provide targeted delivery of active ingredients and protect the bite area from scratching, representing a diversification in product offerings.

A significant trend observed in the formulations is the prevalence of natural ingredients. Examples include white willow bark in Nature’s Willow Bug Bite Balm , colloidal oatmeal, tea tree oil, witch hazel, and menthol in Zax’s Original Bug Bite & Itch Cream , various essential oils in AtlanTick Comfort Patches and Purple Frog Wild Relief Anti Itch Spray , and shea butter, cocoa butter, and essential oils in the Great Canadian Soap Company Bug Bite Body Butter.

  1. Excluded Products

For market context, it is important to note prominent bug bite relief products mentioned in the research that are explicitly not made in Canada.

  • After Bite: This well-known brand, which includes various formulations for insect bite relief, is manufactured by Tender Corporation (now Adventure Ready Brands) in Littleton, New Hampshire, USA. After Bite is a leading insect bite treatment in North America and is widely sold in Canada through various retailers, including the Canadian Red Cross, Well.ca, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Its exclusion from the “Made in Canada” count is therefore significant.
  • Melii Electric Bug Bite Relief: This electronic device for bug bite relief lists its Country of Origin as China.
  1. Verification of “Made in Canada” Claims

The determination of whether a product is “Made in Canada” is central to this report and involves navigating specific labeling standards and occasional ambiguities.

  1. Approach to Verification

The verification process relied on explicit statements found on product packaging or official websites (e.g., “Made in Canada” prominently displayed by Nature’s Willow and Zax’s Original , or on retailer listings for Aleva Naturals ), manufacturer’s declared location of manufacturing (such as the Great Canadian Soap Company detailing production on their PEI farm ), and official company information linking production to Canada. The strongest evidence was considered to be explicit product-level claims, followed by direct manufacturer confirmation of Canadian production sites for the specific product lines in question.

  1. Understanding Canadian Labelling Standards

It is important to understand that the term “Made in Canada” carries specific regulatory meaning. According to Canada’s Competition Bureau guidelines, a “Product of Canada” claim requires that 98% of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the good have been incurred in Canada. A “Made in Canada” claim indicates that the last substantial transformation of the good occurred in Canada and that at least 51% of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the good have been incurred in Canada. If a “Made in Canada” claim is made, it should be accompanied by a qualifying statement when the product contains imported content, such as “Made in Canada with domestic and imported ingredients”.

Loblaw Companies Limited, a major Canadian retailer, also provides definitions for its customers: “Product of Canada” means nearly all of the product’s ingredients, processing, and labour are Canadian, while “Made in Canada” means the product was manufactured in Canada but may include some imported ingredients. Some of their store-brand (Life Brand) products may also carry a “Prepared in Canada” label, which typically means the product was processed or manufactured in Canada using a combination of domestic and/or imported ingredients. This regulatory framework is crucial for accurately interpreting claims and determining which products genuinely meet the “Made in Canada” criterion.

  1. Challenges and Ambiguities in Verification

Several challenges and ambiguities arose during the verification process. As discussed previously, brands owned by Canadian companies or multinational corporations with Canadian subsidiaries do not always provide explicit “Made in Canada” information for each specific product. For example, while Shoppers Drug Mart is a Canadian-owned and operated company, this does not automatically confirm that every Life Brand product is manufactured in Canada. The practice of using Canadian symbols, like the maple leaf, on branding or in-store signage by Canadian companies for products that may be sourced internationally has been noted, sometimes termed “Canuckwashing” or “Maplewashing”. This can create confusion for consumers trying to identify genuinely Canadian-made goods.

Smaller, niche Canadian brands often appear more inclined to explicitly state “Made in Canada” on their product packaging or websites, seemingly using this as a key marketing differentiator. Brands like Nature’s Willow , Zax’s Original , Great Canadian Soap Company , and Purple Frog (as per its Amazon.com listing ) frequently feature “Made in Canada” prominently. These are generally smaller or more specialized enterprises. Conversely, for larger entities or store brands, while the parent company may be Canadian or have Canadian manufacturing operations, the direct “Made in Canada” link for a specific bug bite product was less explicit in the reviewed materials. This suggests that for these smaller players, “Made in Canada” is a valuable component of their brand identity and marketing strategy, potentially appealing to consumers looking to support local businesses or those who associate Canadian-made products with certain quality or ethical standards. Larger companies might prioritize other product attributes in their marketing or have more varied global sourcing strategies that make such specific labeling less consistent across all their product offerings.

  1. Analysis of Advertising Claims for Bug Bite Relief

The manner in which these Canadian-made products are marketed provides further understanding of their positioning.

  1. Common Advertising Language and Claims

The advertising language for the identified Canadian-made bug bite relief products commonly focuses on providing rapid relief from symptoms. Typical claims include “stops itching,” “soothes irritation/skin,” “reduces pain/swelling,” and often highlight “natural relief,” “plant-based” ingredients, or being “pharmacist-developed/recommended.”

Specific examples include:

  • Nature’s Willow Bug Bite Balm: “Stop the Itch,” “natural bug bite & sting relief,” “stopping pain and itch fast”.
  • Zax’s Original Bug Bite & Itch Cream: “Stops itching,” “Reduces pain and protects skin,” “Relieves irritation & swelling”.
  • AtlanTick Comfort Patches: “Reduce bug bite itching, scratching and scarring,” “relief from insect bites and skin irritations”.
  • Great Canadian Soap Company Bug Bite Body Butter: “Soothing care for insect bites to ease the swelling and itchiness”.
  • Purple Frog Wild Relief Anti Itch Spray: “Soothes Bug Bites and Burns,” “itch protection and relief from bug bites”.
  • Aleva Naturals On The Spot Moisturizing Balm (via retailer claim): “helps sooth pain from bumps, bruises, bites”.
  1. Target Audience and Positioning

Several products appear to target families or those with sensitive skin. Nature’s Willow Bug Bite Balm is described as “kid-friendly” , and Purple Frog Wild Relief Anti Itch Spray is positioned as an “all-in-one outdoor skin care solution for the whole family”.

A dominant positioning strategy revolves around the use of natural ingredients. A significant portion of these Canadian-made bug bite relief products emphasizes “natural” or “plant-based” formulations in their advertising, often coupled with claims of being gentle or suitable for sensitive skin and children. This is evident with Nature’s Willow highlighting “Plant-Based & Non-Toxic” ingredients like White Willow Bark and pure essential oils. Zax’s Original refers to “natural ingredients” such as Colloidal Oatmeal, Tea Tree Oil, Witch Hazel, and Menthol. Purple Frog states its spray is “Made with All-Natural Ingredients” including natural essential oils, aloe vera, and witch hazel. The Great Canadian Soap Company emphasizes its Bug Bite Body Butter is “100% Natural”. AtlanTick Comfort Patches are “infused with…essential oils”. This consistent theme across multiple Canadian-made brands indicates a deliberate market positioning towards natural remedies, which likely resonates well with a segment of Canadian consumers seeking such alternatives and who may be wary of synthetic chemicals.

  1. Conclusion

This analysis has identified six distinct consumer products that are confirmed through available information as being manufactured in Canada and advertised to resolve the effects of bug bites: Nature’s Willow Bug Bite Balm, Zax’s Original Bug Bite & Itch Cream, AtlanTick Comfort Patches, Great Canadian Soap Company Bug Bite Body Butter, Purple Frog Wild Relief Anti Itch Spray, and Aleva Naturals On The Spot Moisturizing Balm (with retailer-supported bug bite claims). These products are primarily offered by smaller, specialized companies and often emphasize natural or plant-based formulations.

The key challenge in this research has been the verification of “Made in Canada” claims, particularly for products from larger corporations or private label brands where company nationality does not always equate to domestic manufacturing for every specific item. The distinction between “Product of Canada,” “Made in Canada,” and “Prepared in Canada” further complicates this assessment for consumers and analysts alike.

The Canadian market for bug bite relief products appears to feature a discernible niche for locally manufactured items that often highlight natural ingredients and gentle formulations. This suggests a consumer segment responsive to such positioning. However, the clarity and consistency of “Made in Canada” labeling, especially for products from larger companies or private labels with complex international supply chains, can present a hurdle for those seeking precise market understanding or wishing to specifically support Canadian-manufactured goods. This situation may represent an opportunity for enhanced transparency in labeling standards or for companies to more explicitly leverage verified Canadian manufacturing as a signal of trust, quality, and local economic contribution, particularly given the evident consumer interest in Canadian-made products.

Firecraft Journal: Ignite Your Firecraft Skill Level

Ignite Your Expertise: Why the Firecraft Journal is Your Key to Mastering Fire Skills

Fire. For millennia, it’s been our companion for warmth, cooking, signaling, and security in the wild. In the backcountry of British Columbia, or any wilderness setting, reliable fire-starting skills aren’t just a convenience—they can be a lifeline. But how do you move beyond just knowing how to build a fire to truly mastering the art and science of firecraft, regardless of the conditions? The answer lies in deliberate practice and insightful reflection, and we’ve created the perfect tool to guide you: The Firecraft Journal.

What is the Firecraft Journal?

Think of the Firecraft Journal as your personal field notebook and mentor for every fire you build. It’s a free, downloadable resource from QUICK-FIRE.ca designed to systematically guide your practice and help you learn from every spark, flame, and ember.

Each entry in the journal prompts you to record crucial details about your fire-making experiences, including:

  • Your Objective: What did you aim to achieve? (e.g., test a new fire striker, use specific tinder like fatwood fluff or dryer lint, boil water in under 5 minutes, maintain a fire in the rain, etc.)
  • Environmental Conditions: Date, location, outside temperature, ground conditions (snowy, damp, dry duff), and weather (wind, rain, sun, humidity).
  • Tools Used: What did you use to prepare your fire pit and process your materials?
  • Materials Gathered: What tinder, kindling, and larger wood did you use? What species were they, and what was their condition (dry, damp, wet)?
  • Practice Takeaways: What scenarios did you consider? (e.g., conserving fuel, starting a fire with minimal tools).
  • Reflection: What challenges did you face? What worked well? What new questions or insights do you have?

Why the Firecraft Journal Will Elevate Your Skills

Mastering firecraft is more than just luck or repetition; it’s about understanding the interplay of fuel, air, heat, and the environment. The Firecraft Journal is designed to accelerate this understanding. Here’s how:

  1. Transforms Practice into Purposeful Learning: Instead of just building fires, you’ll be conducting mini-experiments. Each entry helps you focus on specific goals and variables.
  2. Creates a Powerful Knowledge Base: Forget trying to recall what tinder worked best in last spring’s damp conditions. Your journal becomes your personal database of what works, what doesn’t, and why, across a multitude of scenarios.
  3. Sharpens Your Observation Skills: You’ll start noticing the subtle details that make a big difference – the way the wind shifts, the moisture content of wood, the effectiveness of different tinder preparations.
  4. Promotes Critical Reflection: The reflection prompts encourage you to analyze your successes and failures, leading to deeper insights and quicker learning. Did that fatwood fluff ignite instantly even when the ground was damp? Why did that particular fire lay struggle in the wind?
  5. Builds Adaptability and Confidence: By consistently recording your experiences in various conditions (from sunny days to challenging rain or snow in the BC backcountry), you’ll build a robust mental toolkit and the confidence to make fire reliably, anywhere, anytime.
  6. Tracks Your Progress: See how far you’ve come! Looking back at earlier entries can be incredibly motivating and highlight your growth.
  7. Encourages Scenario-Based Thinking: The “Practice Takeaway” section pushes you to think beyond the immediate fire, considering how you’d adapt your techniques for different survival situations.

More Than Just a Logbook

The Firecraft Journal isn’t just about recording data; it’s a catalyst for continuous improvement. It encourages a mindset of curiosity and experimentation. Campfire Starters Episode 21

Firestarter Stick

Ferrocerium Rod Strikes

No Match Campfires

Firecraft is the practice of lighting fires with no matches for campfire or survival. In this episode we ignite our 21st fire and continue to count the strikes on the same QUICK-FIRE ferrocerium rod and we will continue striking with the same ferro rod until we cannot strike it any longer! This is the first ever public ongoing test to see how many strikes a typical ferro rod had.

We are also counting how many fires we can light with each QUICK-FIRE fatwood stick. Our first fatwood stick broke on Episode 18 and this is our third fire with our second fatwood stick.

The location for practicing our firecraft was moved to TW Outdoors in Kelowna, where we used our trade show equipment and banner for QUICK-FIRE demonstrations at the TW 30th birthday celebration!
